How to move legacy systems to the cloud while maintaining security, compliance, and business continuity.
Migrating to the cloud is less a single event and more a structured project with distinct phases. Rushing it or treating it as a simple 'lift and shift' is the most common reason migrations run over budget or cause downtime.
1. Assess before you move anything
Inventory every application, its dependencies, and how business-critical it is. Not everything needs to move at once, and some legacy tools may be better replaced than migrated.
2. Choose the right migration strategy per workload
- Rehost ("lift and shift") fastest, good for time-sensitive moves
- Replatform minor optimizations during the move, e.g. managed databases
- Refactor rebuild for cloud-native scalability, best long-term ROI
- Retire or replace some legacy systems are cheaper to replace than migrate
3. Plan for security and compliance from day one
Cloud providers secure the infrastructure; you remain responsible for configuring access controls, encryption, and data residency correctly. Bake this into the migration plan rather than retrofitting it afterward.
4. Migrate in waves, not all at once
Start with lower-risk, non-critical systems to validate your process, then move business-critical workloads with a tested rollback plan in place.
5. Monitor cost and performance after go-live
Cloud costs can creep upward without active monitoring. Set budget alerts and review resource sizing regularly many businesses overprovision in the first few months out of caution.
